A 25-year-old man reportedly died of asphyxiation while he was cleaning a sewage tank in a mall in Royapettah early on Tuesday. Police said the victim has been identified as Arunkumar.
According to police, at 4 a.m. on November 12, Dhandapani, a contractor, and 5 daily-wage workers from Triplicane entered the basement area of the shopping mall and began cleaning.
Initially, one of the workers, Ranjit Kumar, and another person entered the sewage storage tanks. As they both fainted inside, Arunkumar, Ranjit Kumar’s brother, jumped into the tank in an attempt to rescue them. Although the two men managed to climb back up, Arunkumar himself fainted inside.
The others managed to retrieve Arunkumar and rushed him to Government Royapettah Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
A senior police officer said the cause of death can be ascertained only after an autopsy. The police are looking into it.
