Screens have become so ubiquitous that sometimes it’s hard to remember there was a time when we didn’t carry gadgets around. Kids especially spend all their waking hours glued to electronic devices, often depriving themselves of sleep.
Sadly, a young girl below was left nearly blind in one eye due to the habit of using her smartphone through the night.
According to doctors from a hospital in China, a female patient was admitted because she could see nothing in her left eye after waking up. The reason was that she often used the phone at night and checked it the first thing in the morning.
The doctors said the young girl had broken blood vessels in her left eye due to her phone habit. One of them explained that she often stayed up late playing on her phone and then picked it up after waking up, thus not allowing her eyes any rest.
To save the woman’s left eye, the doctors used a laser to a small circle on the retina to drain blood out. After the surgery was completed and combined with the appropriate resting regime, the female patient was finally able to see again.
There have been reported cases around the world of patients suffering from temporary smartphone blindness after using their smartphone while in bed and with the lights switched off.
Also known as transient smartphone blindness, the condition occurs when one eye is adjusted to the brightness of the smartphone display, while the other stays accustomed to darkness.
Doctors suggest letting your eyes rest after using any kinds of screens, and turn on “night mode” on phones and tablets after dark.
